Different Cultures Uniting (By Ellie, Thulisile, Thamsanqa, Mzamo & Steph)

On the 13th July 14 Bablake students (or ‘learners’ as they are called) embarked on a two week adventure to Harrismith Secondary School in Intabazwe, South Africa. Our aim was to build a link with the school and learn about each other’s different cultures. We discovered after the first day, when we were paired with a Harrismith school learner, that there are a lot more differences in our cultures and traditions than we first realised. Firstly, there are 11 official languages and with that come 11 different cultures. Amos, a student in Grade 12, told us that by law, everyone must respect every culture and sharing in their tradition is encouraged by a heritage day which is held on the 24th September. They share food and cook for each other. Therefore, we felt inspired to document the differences and similarities that we encountered on our trip. We asked Thulisile, a girl in grade 12, to answer our questions about her culture and she asked us in return. Read more here.

Mandela Day (By Thamsanqa & Ellie)

Today was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela day, which celebrates his birthday and this year he turned 95. The whole school attended a parade which included lots of singing and prayer. Mr Yende and Mr Tshabalala gave a motivational speech about Mr Mandela and how he ended apartheid. Mandela was President for four years, from 1994 to 1999. During this time he made many changes. He made education free for children and built RDP houses, which was a reconstruction and development programme. Read more here.
